Let me begin by saying I am not an expert regarding Disney Monorails. I'm simply a collector and seller who really enjoys putting together a few great loves, Disney, Trains, Buying and Selling and well, playing with toys at my age. I turned 21 for the 24th time this week!
I would liken this to a poor mansOlszewski Main Street Collection, but one you and your children can actually play with and not have a stroke if they get near them (they are all made of plastic and for the most part are pretty durable). The geparison being you can create your very own Disneyland or Disney World right in your family room, but for much less money. These playsets have been around for nearly a decade, the first piece, the Red Stripe Monorail came out in 1999. More pieces followed including many of your favorite rides and attractions like Dumbo the Flying Elephant, the Mad Tea Party, the Astro Orbiter and others. I intend to post a geprehensive checklist of sorts for those trying to geplete the entire series shortly, some of you may not be aware of what's available, while others may not know some of the geplimentary pieces (playsets that we collectors have adopted as part of our collections that may not be "official" Monorail accessories), but most of us agree just happen to work in perfectly with the series, the Disney Town Square Playset released by Sears back in 1988 is a good example.
Moving on, there are a number of colors available for the Monorails, some very rare, and some more gemon. Opinions vary here, but not by many. There are the Red Stripe, Black, Gold or the 50th anniversary version, Yellow, Purple, Blue and most recently Green which is still available at the Parks as of the day this was drafted. The newest releases, the Blue and Green Stripe versions have removable doors and windows and the interiors are decorated. They gee with little Disney characters you can put inside the cars and extra packs of figurines are for sale still for about $8.50. Sounds pretty cool, right? Yep, it "sounds" cool, if it weren't for the fact that whoever designed them didn't notice that the doors and windows fall off when you breathe on them. It's ironic that the worst design flaw on any of the series was the one most recently released. If you have small children, this item should not be within their reach. These pieces are small enough to be ingested by the tiniest mouth. Yes, I'm aware they have a disclaimer regarding what is age appropriate, but I'm also aware that older siblings may leave the playsets in reach of little fingers. Back to Monorail colors, the Golden Gate Bridge Monorail Playset sold at Disneylands California Adventurealso has a blue stripe Monorail not unlike the recent Blue Stripe release, but the doors and windows are static like the "old school" Monorails. This set is also one of the very rarest of all the Monorail releases andis highly sought after, I saw one set sell for over $500 last year, but $300 to $375 is the norm for this one. Now the grandadaddy of them all, the reigning champ is the uber-rare Silver Stripe Monorail Playset. It was the only limited edition Monorail (I am only covering the playsets in this rant, and not the Bob GurrDie Cast versions) and was only sold at a Disneyana convention, I believe the edition size was 300. I only see these at auction about once or twice a year! Well, that's all for now, but I will continue to expand this and will gratefully welgee any corrections, as I alluded to in the opening, I'm not an expert, but I do spend a great deal of time learning about one of the best Disneyana collectibles ever released in my humble opinion and I love sharing it with others. This hobby is so much fun and I hope you have a chance to pick up a piece or two for you and your family and start to build your very own recreation of one of the Magic Kingdoms of your preference. Why leave the whole experience to once a year when most of you who don't live in driving distance of Orlando or Anaheim, put one in your spare bedroom or family room and bring the magic home with you today! Feel free to stop by my auctions if you have any questions in the meanwhile, I'll do my best to answer any questions you might have or direct you to an answer if I don't know myself (I have friends in low places) I'm under the username Collectitall41 and remember the immortal words of George Burns "any day above ground is a good one"!
